Can BOTOX Help Alleviate TMD Symptoms?

You’re probably aware that BOTOX® is a popular cosmetic solution for fine lines and wrinkles in the face. BOTOX also has other therapeutic benefits! For example, it can be a highly effective treatment option for patients who experience head and jaw pain from temporomandibular (TMJ) dysfunction. This is because BOTOX temporarily paralyzes fibers of certain facial muscles. Tight muscles in the face and neck are often responsible for some of the symptoms of TMJ disorder (TMD).

Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction

  • Pain and tenderness in the jaw and its joints that can radiate to other parts of the face, the neck, and the upper back
  • Clicking and/or popping of the jaw joints
  • Lockjaw
  • Frequent tension headaches
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Earaches and ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

How Can BOTOX Help?

Since BOTOX relaxes the muscles of the face, it can help relieve tension in the jaw muscles and alleviate the pain associated with TMJ disorders. The frequency and number of injections you may need will depend on a variety of factors, such as the severity of your TMD symptoms, your facial anatomy, and how your body reacts to the treatment.

Is BOTOX Permanent?

After your BOTOX treatment, you can expect around 3-4 months of relief. Your body will metabolize the injected botulinum toxin as time passes. If you find yourself experiencing TMD symptoms again within this period, call us. You may benefit from another round of injections. This additional treatment is normal and safe for most patients. Although BOTOX is a temporary treatment for facial tension and TMD dysfunction, it can be combined with other therapies as you work to achieve long-lasting relief.
