When caring for the health of your teeth, there a variety of factors to consider. One of those factors is how to best protect the enamel, or outer layer, of your teeth. That’s because the enamel serves as a protective barrier against plaque and tartar that can lead to decay, cavities, and sensitivity. So to protect your teeth, you must protect the enamel. Here are a few ways you can take care of your teeth’s first defense and maintain that glowing smile for life.

  1. Expose Your Teeth to Fluoride
  2. Fluoride is a natural mineral that works as a strengthener for teeth. It is found in most tap water and many brands of toothpaste. We recommend drinking plenty of fluoridated water and using fluoridated toothpaste and fluoridated mouthwash in your daily at-home dental routine to fortify your enamel. Keep in mind that kids under six years old should not use mouthwash, and kids between six and twelve require close adult supervision when using mouthwash.

  3. Limit Sugary Foods & Beverages
  4. Sugary foods and beverages create an acidic environment that leads to the breakdown of enamel. Switch out sodas and juices for milk or water. After consuming starchy carbohydrates and sweets, be sure to rinse your mouth with water and chew sugar-free gum for at least 20 minutes.

  5. Avoid Foods & Habits That Stain Teeth
  6. Tobacco products, wine, coffee, and tea can all stain the enamel of your teeth. Try to avoid this problem by quitting smoking, as well as reducing your intake of these staining beverages and rinsing with water after consuming them.

  7. Brush & Floss Daily
  8. Excellent oral hygiene includes brushing and flossing daily so that the enamel doesn’t break down from acid and plaque exposure. Brush twice a day for two minutes each time and floss in between teeth to remove leftover food particles and bacteria.

  9. Visit Us for Dental Checkups Twice a Year
  10. At your dental visit, we will thoroughly clean every surface of your teeth. To protect and strengthen enamel, ask about a fluoride treatment or dental sealant to help fight cavities and decay.

  11. Eat & Drink Dairy Products
  12. Research has shown that dairy products can fortify teeth and help reduce harmful acid in the mouth that leads to cavities. Drinking milk and eating yogurt can help give teeth and bones vital calcium to keep them strong.

  13. Drink Plenty of Water
  14. Water is necessary for adequate saliva production and helps cleanse the mouth of food and bacteria that lead to plaque and decay. Sip water throughout the day, especially during and after meals, even when you aren’t thirsty.
